Swakopmund Travel Guide: 70 reviews and 228 photos

I frankly did not really enjoy Swakopmund, but that may partly be because we were there on a weekend in low season and everything was shut down. Apparently it become a very busy place for most of December and the early part of January, when the people of Wiindhoek get out of town to escape the heat and settle down here for the school holidays. The population of Swakopmund triples in this period.

The architecture is classic early 1900's German and there are numerous interesting buildings around this small town.

The rebuilt pier

Swakopmund has a terrible harbour and in an attempt to improve the loading and unloading of ships a large wooden pier was built. It was recently reconstructed / restored.

If became obsolete when Namibia was administered by South Africa after WW I and the nearby port at Walvis Bay was used for handling shipping.

Craft Market

There is a Sunday market for native handicrafts down near the water
