  • Hated by the natives of Rome, this is a massive white marble monolith
    nicknamed Mussolini's Typewriter.
Still the view from its top is wonderful.

  • The greatest amphitheatre of the antiquity - was built in Rome, Italy, about 20 centuries ago.
It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder, and remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman world.
Love watching the gladiators on their mobile phones, scooters or just having a beer:)

Roman Forum: The centre of Rome during Republic

  • The Roman Forum used to be the political and economical centre of Rome during the Republic.
It emerged as such in the 7th century BCE and maintained this position well into the Imperial period, when it was reduced to a monumental area. It was mostly abandoned at the end of the 4th century.
The importance of the Forum area is indicated by the presence of many of the central political, religious and judicial buildings in Rome. The Regia was the residence of the kings, and later of the rex sacrorum and pontifex maximus; the Curia, was the meeting place of the Senate; and the Comitium and the Rostra, where public meetings were held. Major temples and sanctuaries in the Forum include the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Saturn and the Temple of Vesta. Commercial and judicial activities took place in the basilicas, the two remaining are the Basilica Aemilia and the Basilica Julia.

  • Thats the major monument certifying the birth of Romania as culture and obviously commemorates Traian's victory in his military campaigns to conquer Dacia.

Piazza Venezia - Vittoriano: Vittorio Emmanuel II monument

  • As their first king, the free Italians had chosen Vittorio Emmanuel II, who was succeeded by his son Umberto. And obviously the Italian people needed a grand, magnificent monument to express their pride for the reign of their first king. The tomb in the best building of antiquity was not enough (thats the Pantheon). So, they commissioned the construction of the Vittorio Emmanuel Monument, at the base of the Campidoglio Hill. With expert craftsmanship, and cheap white marble, the Italians built this monument to their king, a magnificent testimony to the power of the free Italians people. But, I could understand that nowadays theyre not that big fans anymore of this too magnificent & gaudy monument.

    Piazza Navona: Piazza Navona

  • This piazza is a marvel of light and sculpture. It is exceptionally long and owes its shape to the ruins that formed it, for under the buildings that surround Piazza Navona are the remains of the Circus Domitianus, Domitian's stadium -- a part of which can be seen if you leave the piazza by the north exit and turn left.
In the centre of the piazza is Bernini's most spectacular fountain, la Fontana dei Fiumi - the Fountain of the 4 Rivers: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Rio della Plata, each representing one of the four quarters of the world.
At the northern end is the Fontana di Nettuno and at the other end, the fontana del Moro designed as well by Bernini and featuring Moor fighting with a dolphin.

  • The Trevi Fountain is certainly the most famous and spectacular fountain in Rome if not worldwide.
Here Anita Ekberg cooled off at night in Fellini's film La Dolce Vita. As well this used to be the setting for the popular romantic film Three Coins a Fountain.

  • The central niche depicts Neptune, the sea god, riding a winged chariot driven by sea horses through the gushing waters from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct. The chariot is drawn by winged steels and is led by a pair of tritons, the figures in the side represent good health and fertility. Corinthian columns flank a triumphant arch with a large niche representing the palace of Neptune.

  • Villa Borghese today in the heart of Rome, was the suburban residence of the Borghese family. Built in 1616 by the nephew of Paul V, the Cardinal Scipio Borghese, it was surrounded by large and varied gardens, which are still populated by eagles and dragons, the heraldic symbols of the family. The architect of the Casino was Jan Van Santen, a Dutchman known also as Giovanni Vasanzio.

Arch of Constantine: Arch of Constantine

  • It's unfortunate that this arch stands next to the Colosseum, as, naturally, anything in the vicinity of the Colosseum will be dwarfed by the comparison.
Yet this is unfair with regard to the Arch of Constantine.
It's one of the largest arches built by the Romans, is well preserved and features some very fine sculptures.
Luckily its proximity to the Colosseum brings the idle wanderer over to find out what it is and be rewarded by what it offers.
