"Nafplio" Nafplio by JessieLang

Nafplio Travel Guide: 230 reviews and 701 photos

Nafplio was the first capital of modern independent Greece, from 1829 to 1834. The war of independence against the Turks began in 1821 and lasted until 1826.

Nafplio has some interesting architecture, as the town went back and forth between Turkish and Venetian control over the centuries. There are two mosques in town, but they are not in use.

Much earlier, the area around the town of Nafplion used to be a bustling port in the Neolithic period.

The city was named after Nafplios, son of Poseidon, and was also famous as the birthplace of Palamidis, the local hero of the Trojan war.
