Sparta Travel Guide: 16 reviews and 27 photos

Ancient Sparta was one of the most important City-States in Greece, but now it is just a small town. The ancient city hasn’t been fully excavated, and probably won’t be (modern Sparta is on top of it) but the ruins of a theater are out past the soccer field, and anyone can visit.

Sparta’s main sight is a large bronze statue of the Spartan King Leonidas, with the Ancient Greek words for “Come and get us” inscribed on the base. That was the response to Persians’ terms for their surrender.

Why visit Sparta? It is the place to stay when visiting Mystra, the ruins of a Byzantine city, just a few miles away.
