The town is the nearest mainland harbour to the quite, green island of Samothraki.

Greece has been the first country that offered citizens of Turkish decent access to the European Union; the sizable muslim minority of Greece is concentrated in the region of Thrace, although few of them reside close to SAlexandroupolis. Maybe half of the 200000 strong muslim indigenous population are of turkish decent and they have been EU citizens since 1981! Their co-existence with the local Greeks is gradually improving.
