An average town of 50000 inh., Katerini has no special charm, but its location between the highest mountain in Greece and 100 kms of sandy beaches makes it an attractive, convenient place to stay. It is the only area- as far as I know- in mediterranean Europe where there is an altitude difference of almost 3000 m. within less than 20 kms. Proximity to Thessaloniki gives us the necessary cultural stimuli, to survive the wet winters here... |
| | Olympic trekking... Trekking in legendary Mount Olympus is quite easy and very enjoyable. It takes 4 hrs of walking from the last car parking site(location Prionia) to reach the first refuge at 2100 m. Add 3-4 more hours and u've reached the peaks u see in the picture, where the 12 Gods of Greek antiquity allegedly lived! There is another hut at 2.700 m. to stay overnight. The feeling of waking up above the clouds and the tranquility of the place is unique... Accessible from May to October, depending on weather. Last autumn the first snow covered Olympos on November 4rth. |
To reach the top, MYTIKAS, you only need to climb the last 100 or so meters. More information soon at my LITOHORO page, the starting point for most visitors! www.tavridis.tk | | |
