The town is small and surrounds a little lake with walking paths all around it (and nordic walking trails radiating out from it). There are three grocery stores and a nice shoe store on the Hauptstrasse.
There are what seems like a million tiny towns in Germany, surrounded by farmland and forest. There are eerie wind generators and brilliant fields of yellow flowers (grown for their oily seeds). Near Baumholder, there is Burg Lichtenberg, a castle that you can walk around, climb the tower and also stay at the hostel and eat at the excellent restaurant. They have concerts there -- it is such a nice local little place.
One of the largest population centers in Baumholder is the U.S. Army. The post is next to town and soldiers are coming back from Iraq.
