THE CUTEST CITY OF NORTHERN COAST

Ever since I joined VT, Sinop has been in the top 10 list for “pages to be built”. Today is the day. I can start writing about this pretty city that is in the northern-most of Turkey, on the Black Sea coast. Before starting, as usual, I checked the other pages built for Sinop and actually there is one page for this less known, pretty city built by maykal. According to Michael, Sinop is an average city but for me it is one of the prettiest cities of Turkey. It is good to have different views though.

So you visitor, if you happen to find this page, firstly thank you and congratulations. Secondly, it may be a good idea to check both of the pages or better make a personal visit to Sinop to build your own pages:)

We went to Sinop in August 2007. It was one of the cities we spent relatively more time in during our two-week long Black Seas road trip. I didn’t have any idea about the city prior to our arrival. I just knew about the famous prison by the sea because it is mentioned in various poems and songs. People who were imprisoned due to their ideas were mostly in Sinop prison and it must be a real torture to hear the waves, smell the sea but not to have the right to see the sea. I’ll give you more details and opinions in my tips.

FRIENDLY PEOPLE

I love this city maybe because of the warm welcome we had when we arrived. We arrived Sinop from Amasra via Kastamonu. We didn’t have any reservations and we had spent all the cash we had in Kastamonu. We were looking for a place to park our car when the owner of a very small tea house waived his hand and invited us. Of course, he offered us tea and after checking the plate of our car, he asked us about the purpose of our visit. When he learned that we were on a road trip, he and his wife got really excited and immediately arranged three different hotels for us to see. They were all next to each other, all at the same price and the rooms were more or less the same. We randomly picked one. Then, he showed us where the banks were located and our monetary problems were solved. We left the tea house and promised to come back before we left the city.

The next morning we went there for a morning tea and to ask for a daily itinenary. We had a plan in our mind but thought it would be wise to ask the locals. When we arrived in the little tea house, there was the owner and another middle-aged man drinking his morning tea. When we started chatting with the owner about what to see, he asked us whether we would want him to be our guide. He was a retired man looking for a daily activity to fulfill his day. We asked him how much he wanted for his service and he said it would be OK to pay for his lunch and leave him at his house by the end of the day. He said we could also pay whatever we wanted if we were satisfied at the end. He wasn’t a guide after all.

The details of this wonderful day with our pop-up guide in the tips section. It was great to have him with us as he knew the city very well. Now please continue with the tips to discover this pretty little city.
