There's a helluva lot more to Dublin than Temple Bar (thank god!)
I have intentionally aimed with this page to highlight some of Dublin's features and aspects that get overlooked by other guides, as well as including those attractions that truly deserve to be described as such in my humble view. Dublin is an ancient and vibrant city but many visitors, for purely commercial reasons, are steered away from the very places that would make their stay memorable and all the more enjoyable.
For those interested in the history of the town and who would like to do their own "historical walking tour" when here, I have put a suggested route with info in two travelogues which currently reside on my Ireland page. On this page however I have listed some "must see" places and activities that I reckon, as a local, help give Dublin its unique atmosphere, and which it would be the traveller's misfortune to miss when here. Others may wax lyrical about blatant rip-offs such as the Book Of Kells and the "pub scene" in Temple bar - here you will find just some of the many cheaper, and much more rewarding, alternatives to the normal tourist trail.
Whatever you get up to when you're here have a great time. We didn't build all them pubs just for our own amusement you know! :o)
The pic above shows Dublin's oldest continuously inhabited house, situated on what the Corporation have left us of the ancient Fishamble Street and built in the early 1600s on a site dating back to the Viking era. |
| | The image to the left shows the view west from Christchurch Cathedral at sunset. At one time this was Dublin's main street - and in the English tradition still retains the name High Street. Along this stretch, up to recently where I lived, can be found the only remaining portion of Dublin's medieval walls.
Further information about Dublin's medieval past can be found in my travelogues. |
I am in the process of redesigning these pages (slowly alas) after VT's recent drastic changes to the site layout and posting regulations. If you can't find the tips you're looking for in my Dublin pages or wish to know more specific details about this town don't hesitate to contact me by e-mail here at VT and I'll do what I can to help you out.
This picture is of Christchurch Cathedral, scene of two famous crownings - one of an Irish High King (as you would expect) and one of a king of England. There's a pint on for anyone who wants to track me down when here with the identity of both of them! :o) | | | St Michael's Chapel, Christchurch Cathedral |
