In the land of Nanuq

by Kalexus - last update: Apr 13, 2009

One week in one red house with 12 people. This is the bottom line of one of the most amazing times I spent travelling.
Kulusuk is a small village of approx. 300 inhabitants (mostly Inuit, 2-3 Danes) on Kulusuk Island on the Eastern Coast of Greenland.

Temperatures in February were around -18° to -20°C which was really okay with the right clothing of course.

Activities in the wintertime

Dog sled trips around the island can be organized any time if the weather is alright. Most owners of dog sleds are more than happy to give a tour as they genuinely need the extra income from tourism. There is no real booking place, as everything is done in a quite informal way but the village shop would be the first address to ask. Alternatively ask Jóhann Brandsson, an Icelander who lives in Kulusuk in the later winter, spring and summer and works in tourism. I paid around 400 Danish kroner for a trip to the ice lake near the airport.

Normal sleds to run down the many hills can be rented too.

Hiking is of course one of the main activities in Kulusuk as the place is mainly about beautiful nature and remote and sparse civilization. Always ask the locals when you plan a day-long hiking trip, as the weather conditions may change enough to put you in danger. Locals will also warn you about dangerous places, for example where polar bears might show up (and although polar bears are amazing animals, you don't want to meet one, even if you have a gun).
There are several good places to go, but don't miss the eerie white cemetary on the hill between Kulusuk and the airport and go at least one evening towards the sea to witness a sunset.

A drum dance show can be organized at Anna and Arvid Thastum's house. You'll also get to see some traditional clothes and shoes.

Pros:"traditional Inuit village, almost no foreigners, friendly inhabitants"
Cons:"not for children or elderly people in the wintertime, as the snow is very high"
