"Great Beach Day" North Miami Beach by sunloverinatlanta

Had a great time at the beach

We were headed to Mexico and then the swine flu hit. We had four days to cancel all plans and plan a whole new trip. Airtran waived change fees for anyone with tickets to Mexico so our vacation choices were anywhere that Airtran goes.
We picked Miami with a road trip to Key West.
We stayed at the Days Thunderbird Beach Resort. For about $80 a night, we were just expecting the bare necessities.
We were pleasantly surprised as our room was rather large with a kitchenette, two tables, a desk and chairs. Then we had a patio with another table and chairs. Beautiful view from the patio. There was fast food, convenience and grocery stores within walking distance.
This is one of the few remaining low rise hotels in Sunny Isles. Trump towers have taken over the area. Feel bad for those people as their building puts their beach in the shade in the afternoon and evening.
Could not imagine what traffic would be like if even a third of the highrises were full. Luckily for us, they all appeared to be completely empty.
The beach was great and the room was clean but very dated.
We only ran into two problems. First, we arrived after dark and the lights were all out in the area over the restaurant. No signs or lights to let you know that there are steps. My friend fell but luckily was not injured. Be very careful or take a flash light.
The "pool staff" was very difficult. This man would not rent us umbrellas because it was windy. It was no more windy than any other beach I have ever been on and there were umbrellas at every hotel and resort up and down the beach as far as we could see. Oh well. We were not charged the $8 per day resort fee and we did get chairs/loungers that most places charge you extra for. At a total cost of under $100 per night on the beach in the North Miami Beach area, we were not complaining and we know we got our money's worth.

Can't say enough about the beach

This is what we were really there for.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

On Biscayne Blvd in downtown Miami at Bayside Marketplace. We had a shrimp platter with four kinds of shrimp. The coconut shrimp, boiled shrimp, and fried shrimp had more flavor than the tempura shrimp. One of the dips was very, very tasty. Maybe a spicy mango dip.
They had a cute idea that every restaurant needs to adopt.
They had two license plates on a holder on your table. One was green and said Run Forest Run. The other was red and said Stop Forest. If you flipped your sign to the red one, the nearest server would stop and see what you needed. It was great. It was almost instant service without having someone repeatedly interrupt your conversation to ask if you need anything.
The desert shooters were nothing special. My friend's was congealed on the top as if it had been made way ahead of time.
I would say don't save room for desert. Fill up on the appetizers and seafood which were excellant.
Park in the parking deck. We got ripped off at the public parking in the median of US 1 in front of the restaurant by a guy posing as a parking attendant. Boy did we feel like morons. But in Atlanta, that is the way parking attendants work. We sure did not fall for it the second time or the third time. If they want tourists to come, they need to fix this problem. We could not find anyone to report it to.
