    • Louisville has two great old historic hotels located downtown. The Seelbach Hilton, located at 500 South Fourth Street and the Camberly Brown hotel located on Broadway (pictured below). The Galt House on the river (a 70's era hotel) has some great views from top of its revolving resturant overlooking downtown and the river, but be warned that it hosts many conventions. If I were staying in Louisville, my choice would be the Brown or Seelbach because they don't built hotels like these anymore.

    • If you are planing a visit to Mammoth Cave National Park, and want a nostolgic old motel of the type when families stayed in 'motor hotels' before the advent of large chains such as the Holiday Inn, check out the Wigwam Village motel near Cave City on US 31W, which is still in business and still delights young children and the young at heart.

    Unique Qualities: This 1930's era motel was built with a 60 foot tall stucco and wood teepee as the office with several additional overnight cabins also shaped as teepees. The interiors were designed to look like what a 'real' western lodge should look like with rustic furniture.

    Eventually, the owner patented the exterior design and it grew to a modest motel chain in 6 states. Another of these Wigwam Villages became a landmark on Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona.

    • See Boone Tavern description at Berea. South of Lexington in Harrodsburg, stay (or at least eat) at Shaker Village or the Beaumont Inn.

    Shaker Village is a restored living history center which shows peaceful way of life of this religous sect. They believed in strict separation of the sexes but they also had advanced views on the equality of people and men and women.

    The Beaumont Inn has been operated by the same family for three generations. The property was a women's college during the civil war. It is very old fashioned and serves traditional Kentucky food.

    • The picture below is of one of the restored residence halls at Shaker Village near Harrodsburg. Visitors can stay in one of the old Shaker houses, eat at one of the old main lodging houses or just visit.
