Standing Stone These prehistoric temples at Hagar Qim and Mnajdra dating from as early as 3800 BC, and the other Neolithic temples on Malta are the oldest known human structures in the world. This megalithic temple complex is adorned with carved animals and idols, sacrificial altars and oracular chambers. Hagar Qim means 'Standing Stone' and though the limestone has been badly eroded, especially on the seaward side, the site still retains megaliths of huge proportions. The largest is 7m by 3m, which is the largest used in any of the temples. |
| | The view of the Mediterranean and the nearby island of Filfla is one of the best in Malta. Between the remaining limestone blocks of the prehistoric temples you can see the uninhabited Filfla Island in the background. |
Venus of Malta When the site was excavated in the early 19th century, seven fat statuettes were found here, among them the so-called 'Venus of Malta', a headless clay figurine of a standing female nude of exceptionally generous proportions. This is now in the National Museum of Archeology, along with squatting stylized figures - also headless and extremely obese - and a four-sided limestone altar found in the temples. | | |
