Valletta was described by Sir Walter Scott as "the city built by gentlemen for gentlemen." The city is named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, grand master of the Knights Hospitalers, or Knights of Malta, a military religious order which founded the city in 1565. |
| | The Upper Barracca Gardens This lovely park was created in the 16th century and served as a practice site for the Italian langue. Eventually, it was opened for the public in the 18th century. From its terrace, you can have a wonderful view of Grand Harbour and The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua). |
St. John's Co-Cathedral It shares the cathedral status with the cathedral of Mdina, the architecture of the two buildings is quite similar as well. Inside, the building is abundantly decorated with gold and marble, and this is where you can see Caravaggio's masterpiece, The Decapitation of St. John the Baptist. | | |
