Prehistoric tombs
Newgrange, as well as the adjacent Knowth, constitute one of the major Stone Age sites in Europe.
The central tomb of Newgrange was accidentally discovered only in 1699. The 19-meter passageway from the entrance to the central cavern slopes upwards, so when light shines through it only reaches about halfway. The builders inserted a roof box in the roof above the entrance, so that when the sun rises on the shortest day of the year, light penetrates all the way to the central chamber. This only occurs around the winter solstice, and even then only for a maximum of 17 minutes in the morning.
The geometric art motifs of more than 5000 years that decorate the interior stones indicate that Newgrange was far more than just a burial place for some important ruling clan.
