Things To Do: Donkey and Mule Sanctuary
  • Tip Rating:
  • Last year, (2004), Nerja Equine Sanctuary opened to provide a home for mistreated and homeless horses, donkeys and mules. The sanctuary, SEPE NERJA, is a local autonomous branch of S.E.P.E. (Sociedad Española para la Protección de los Equinos) a national Spanish society (charity) whose aims are the rescue and protection of all equines.

Last year they had 5 donkeys and 2 elderly mules, plus assorted cats and dogs that were left with them. These they do their best to find homes for.

if you like animals, this is a good place to visit and give some financial aid to as the animals are well cared for and all the staff are all volunteers.

They are open to the public from 10am to 2pm seven days a week. There is a kids club on Saturday, 10-2.

Harriet, one of the staff, has her own website and diary at www.harrietsdonkeys.org

Things To Do: XIX Century Eagle Aquaduct
  • Tip Rating:
  • Have a look at the aqueduct just outside Maro.

The aquaduct was initially built to supply water to the nearby Sugar Factory, or San Joaquin Sugar Mill, there being a tradition of sugar cane plantations and construction of sugar cane mills in the area dating from the XVI century.

It was built under the direction of local master builder Francisco Cantarero and comprises four storeys of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches. The facade was decorated with a gallery of blind, pointed horseshoe arches in the Mudecar style. The aquaduct also features entrance templets on the top storey and a central templet with an inscription reading 'Pura y Limpia Concepción' (Pure and Clean Conception).

The Factory is long since closed but the aquaduct continues to be used for local communal irrigation.

The view of the aqueduct from the roadside is very impressive but do take care.

    Things To Do: Visit Frigiliana
  • Tip Rating:
  • approximately 7 kilometres from Nerja is the beautiful "white village" of Frigiliana. The village retains a lot of the character and charm of life here many years ago. Despite a fairly massive building programme that looks like it might spoil the village, once you get into the heart of the village that goes unnoticed.
    .
Windy and steep cobbled streets have whitewashed houses jammed together. The people here seem to take a lot of care and pride in where they live, with the ladies mopping the street outside there homes everyday and watering their plants.

Hanging baskets and plants in pots and tumbling from terraces make it a great place for photographs. There are bars and restaurants hidden away around corners and at the top of steep hills. One of the prettiest streets is just behind the church.

Frigiliana is a very old village with lots of history. During the Christian Reconquest, of Spain, the village was the site of the final battle in 1569 of the Moorish uprising against their new Christian rulers and their defeat resulted in their complete expulsion of the Moorish population. The history of this period is pictured in 12 ceramic plaques in the old quarter.

If arriving by car, don't be tempted to drive into the village, you'll only end up getting stuck-park at the bottom and walk .

  • Go for a drive beyond Frigiliana and visit some of the other little towns in the interior like Competa for instance. They are mostly built on the sides of hills and are quite charming. Meals will also be cheaper.

    The scenery is lovely too.

    Things To Do: Country Walk
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Take a walk ino the countryside and hills outside Nerja. The roads are quiet and as the road s rise up you get a great view of the surrounding landscape and the sea. You never know what you might see too.
