Went for the Monkeys

We read about this town, and love to see monkeys running around without enclosures so that was our primary reason for detouring to Misahualli. We weren't disappointed - first day the monkeys were all around the town square. Baby one sat in our lap, and enjoyed being patted. The older ones made us a bit more wary, and we had to make sure the zips on our packs were done up, as they explore any openings very quickly. There is a great little beach just off the main square, and it's lovely to see the local people there with all the kids swimming and running around on the sand. The monkeys were there on the second day, as it was shadier and they seem to like to be where the people are.

Stayed at Hotel El Albergue Espanol

This place was great for us, we wanted to be close to the little town, not staying in an outlying resort. Our room was basic, but fine. We had a great little balcony which overlooked the Napo River. Each morning we were up about 6am watching the amazing array of different birds flying around the nearby trees.

Everything geared up for trekking

Which we kind of knew, but being a bit older we didn't want to do too much in the way of trekking. We were looking for just one day forays and there wasn't a lot to choose from. In saying that, we did book one that we thoroughly enjoyed. We did a motorized canoe trip to the Animal Refuge. I'd read that this wasn't a particularly pleasant place to visit, but we thought it was fantastic, and that they are doing a great job. The grounds are lovely, and the guides obviously love working with the animals. After that we continued on upriver to a local museum and had lunch outdoors with our guide.
