New York ... the big 'juicy' apple

by aukjejetty - last update: Sep 22, 2007

Taken from the Staten Island Ferry
This picture was taken in 2002, two years earlier I took the same picture on the ferry to Staten Island. It is a sad sight...it is so obvious a wonderful part which used to be there has disappeared. The skyline is not so extreme now and looks almost modest. I miss those twin towers!
It is true, this city never sleeps, there is transportation all day and night long to everywhere in the city. Now that I am back in the Netherlands, and staying in one of my countries major cities Rotterdam I realize that I miss the "life" going on in New York City.
I went to New York in June and July 2002, summer there is great. There are so many activities going on, free concerts, parades and other festivals. The botanical gardens are beautiful in summer. The only downside is the heat, and can get up to the point that you just want to take a cold shower all day long...
In 2003 I visited NYC in July and November which included two main holidays; July 4th and Thanksgiving day. It was my second time for July 4th, and I have to say Macy's fireworks are just amazing. I have never seen more beautiful fireworks. Too bad it is way to busy outside, everyone seems to leave there house to find a good spot along the river. Macy's Thanksgiving day parade was a little of the same experience. It was overcrowded, all I could see was the big balloons on top of a dense crowd. All in all I had another great time in NYC, it is hard to complain about this city, there is so much to do, and so much to choose from that it is almost impossible to find nothing of your interest!

In September 2006 I moved to NYC after getting my permanent resident card. My children are both Dutch and American citizens for as long as that will last (hopefully forever!), but I am Dutch, and feel Dutch when I am in NYC. I do feel at home, but part of me will always be very European, the way I think and act. It is an enrichtment to know as many cultures as possible, and I feel I am expanding my horizon now that I life here. The energy I feel over here is much greater than what I had in the Netherlands, and life is faster and sometimes a bit hard to keep up with.
