Wandering Around Aachen

Aachen Meeting

Fountain in the Old Centre
TinyTuck (Steff who lives in Aachen) and Jinwenwang (Vivian) decided to meet in Aachen. When I saw the message in the VT-forum I looked up how far Aachen was from Rotterdam, only 3,5 hours by public transport, that is as far as going to my parents in the norht of the Netherlands. I had nothing special to do that weekend and decided to go there to meet and spent some time there by myself. I walked around the city a lot. First because I could not find the youth hostel where I had made a reservation. Even with the help of some locals, I kept walking the wrong way. I didn't carry much, and that is why I didn't mind, I saw nice places and a very beautiful red church on a hill.

I had no map and when I saw a map later on, I was amazed by the area I had walked around. It seemed that Aachen is not such a large city, and most of it is walkable. The youth hostel turned out to be in the southwest of the city, and I had walked a large area in the east and south. I enjoyed the architecture, it is mostly old houses, quite tall. Around the youth hostel it was all green and there was even a field filled with cows next to it.

The centre is old and it is easy to navigate, especialy because of the main square in the middle. I liked the way the old centre is not filled with shops known all over Europe. I also noticed how clean it was throughout the city. On the night I met Steff, Vivian and Doris (608doris) it was busy on the streets and squares because of a Jazz-festival that was going on.
