Phnom Penh is the city where you can find out more about the horrible history of Cambodia in the time of the Khmer Rouge regime. By visiting the Tuol Sleng museum and the Killing fields you get an impression on what it must have been like for the people of Cambodia during the years of war.
In 2004 I have spent many days in Phnom Penh, bought a bicycle for transportation, and stayed with a Chinese-Cambodian family. I started to like the city more and more as I got better in finding my way around. The center is walkable, but where I stayed was a 15-20 minute bikeride out of the center. The traffic is crazy, but fortunatly people have a slow pace, and only a few drive like madman.
If you are interested in the history of Cambodia, a very good book about its history is "When The War Was Over" by Elizabeth Becker. |

AlbuqRay Sat Aug 28, 2004 16:53 UTC Aukje, as hard as it might be, we all should visit Tuol Sleng and not forget what happened. It is hard to understand how people could treat each other that way. The Cambodian people are amazingly resilient. They should be proud of their inner strength. | ukirsari Thu Aug 28, 2003 16:59 UTC Yes, it's not a pleasure to see what the regime did that make Cambodia back to year zero :( | jessicadf Sun Jun 22, 2003 16:12 UTC This is a really terrific page. Starts out depressing, but we're better for the knowledge of it. Interesting comment about how money is handled. Yikes. | Unknownsu Mon Jun 16, 2003 05:22 UTC A tragedy indeed. Great coverage! A near future destination for me! |
