"Ottweiler" Ottweiler by MD2nd

Ottweiler Travel Guide: 11 reviews and 28 photos

Just did a stop by the little town of Ottweiler as I found this little spot beautifully located in Saarland's softly-green, mild and hilly landscape. Ottweiler is close to the town of Merzig, and looks quite inviting to take a walk through its old town, and the almost magical looking, rhododendron park with evergreen, bell shaped plants, and a few historic monuments.

Germany's state, the Saarland, is the smallest German state. It lies in the southwest of Germany and bordering Rhineland-Palatinate, France and Luxembourg. The Saarland was occupied by France, but returned via referendum back to Germany. Since 1957 it is the tenth state of Germany.

Until 1920 Ottweiler was located in what was once the Prussian Rhine Province. During WWII and the break-up of the state of Prussia, the northern half of the Prussian Rhine Province combined with Prussian Province of Westphalia, and the small state of Lippe to form the new state of North Rhine Westphalia. The s outhern half of the Prussian Rhine Province was combined with the Bavarian Palatinate, and the region of Hesse to form the new state of Rhineland Palatinate. A very small piece of the Prussian Rhine Province and a very small piece of the Bavarian Palatinate were taken to form the Saarland, in which located is the town Ottweiler of about 15, 000 citizens.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Wonderful landscape, cute town that has many parking spots for free.
  • Cons:Here and there housing areas are in poor shape.
  • In a nutshell:Locals are nice yet to understand their regional German is quite of a challenge.
