Once one hits the little town Caputh, Friedemann's pocket-bike-and-quad shop will catch the traveler's eye. They also offer to rent a hummer. Gee, a hummer to rent in Caputh! Maybe that doesn't sound spectacular to the average traveler but for those who have lived with what was once the Iron Curtain, the sight of this shop is absolutely amazing, even 20 years after the fall of the wall.
Caputh is about a 30 mns-southwest-drive from Potsdam. Since Caputh lies right at the Havel river and Schwielow lake one can take either a ferry or take the unbelievable beautiful backroads which I did. These roads takes one through rather wild, untouched green, very charming little towns like Ferch, and always along some water of either the Havel river or Schwielow lake with many romantic and hidden camping grounds and campers' sail boats.
Caputh is a small town in the Schwielow municipality in the district of Brandenburg's Potsdam-Mittelmark. Since December 2002 the city council of Ferch and Geltow joined the Schwielow municipality. Most of Caputh's housing area is lovely and renovated, other areas are in poor shape.
- Pros:Landscape, lake and river look like a dream. Paradise for camping & sailboating.
- Cons:Citizens there seem to be less friendly than Brandenburg locals of other towns.
- In a nutshell:Fantastic nature feels like the wonderful nature in North Rhine Westphalia and Schleswig Holstein.

I have been checking out getting a bus from Potsdam to Caputh.
Caputh looks an interesting place to visit and I have added it to my list.
I returned to see those nice places you got to know and ride.
All your pages have hidden treasures and poems. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful spirit!
I'm still amazed that the opening of the wall in 1989 happened so peacefully. (See my Rostock page.) In Bern I lived for one semester in a house where Einstein had once lived with his first wife Mileva.
Who could have thought! Such a lovely place!....And the peculiar name...
this page is terrific. never saw a church that didn't look better with a cat. and hard to believe einstein lived here. so much history in every village in germany. apple juice and mineral water - new to me, sounds good. n.
Nice story about the Hungarian border. The juice is called BAD too, I thought that meant bath? Saw my cousin last month, she lives in a city called BAD something...can't remember where. Nice transportation tips.
Brings back very good memories ;-)
