7months in heaven

24/7 comfort

Seven eleven land

No worries, wherever you are there will always be a seven eleven handy. Alcohol is sold 11am-2pm and 5pm-midnight except on buddhist holidays and week ends before a vote. Of course if you avoid tourists altogether there is a chance of not finding a single seven eleven for about a mile or two, don't feel too lost: there will be one a motorbike ride away.
I have however succeeded in straying away from the hideous things on a couple of occasions: while visiting national parks and losing myself on a tiny and little known island: Ko Si Chang.
Despite my dislike of this reminder of the Americanisation of the world they do come in handy as they all offer a range of very useful and (sometimes) tasty products for emergency searches (nail clippers in chiang Mai...mine had gone overboard, food after clubbing, always good, ...)
waiting for the bus-boat on the West bank

White people everywhere

It is unfortunately impossible to avoid white people altogether: they do group in areas worth seeing. Bangkok, of course, with Khao San road (backpackers' nest) and RCA (London style nightlife). The city holds a couple of things worth a quick look (the reclining buddha, royal palace, temple of dawn). Using the local bus and bus-boat systems is a good way to avoid crowds. Also the Nancy Chandler map of Bangkok (I found mine at the night bazaar), best investment ever for finfing little spots worth seeing and not too well known. One memorable day to thank Nancy Chandler for: travelling along the west bank of the Chao Phraya river. Not too far from Bangkok, in Salaya (Nakhon Pathom district) you have the Buddhamonthon park, buddhism centre and one of the most peaceful areas ever (very few white people).

Pros:"excellent local transport, cheap daily cost of life, lots to see"
Cons:"tourist traps are flourishing, corruption in the big cities, tourism sector overdevelopped compared to everything else"
In A Nutshell:"It all depends on the mode of transport"
