Bangor is a city in Gwynedd, North Wales, and one of the smallest cities in the UK. The city is centred around it's University, with almost half its population being Students. It has the longest main shopping street in the UK, and its fantastic setting on the Menai Straights make it one of the most attractive universities in the UK. It had numerous bars and pubs, many of the larger central ones doing student offers and student nights. The city itself has many points of interest, for example it has the second longest pier in Wales, and ‘Roman Camp’, the site of a Norman Motte and Bailey castle.

A True University Town

The university is relatively small compared to other universities in the UK, however compared to the size of the city it is huge. Bangor only has a local population of approximately 14,000, and the university has around 10,000 students. These students disappear over Christmas and the summer months, leaving the city looking rather deserted.

The city has moderate night life, but is more than enough to cover the population. There are two large public nightclubs, Octagon/Glitterball, located just off high Street, and Time.Amser which, despite being located in the Student Union, is open to the public. Academi is the other, smaller club in the Student Union building, but is exclusively for students (although not just Bangor students, anyone holding a University NUS card is allowed in). Popular bars include branches of Varsity and Fat Cat, but Bar Uno, the student bar on the Friddoedd halls of residence site is also gaining popularity. The most popular public house in town is The Old Glan, known locally as The Yellow Pub, or simply Yellow, which is highly popular with both students and locals.

Great intro to your hometown. Welsh Pride Chili con Carne? Almost sounds like a pun. Hope your birthday is a blast.

Please tell me more about Puffin Island. I have read a couple snippets about it and have received advertisements offering to sell me Puffin Island stamps but always thought that it was only a myth. Thanks!!
