Probably the most famous fountain, the Trevi is big by any standards. The fountain was completed in 1762 and the detail is exquisite.

The center of the Roman Catholic faith and its centerpiece being St Peter's and Piazza San Pietro. St Peter's was consecrated in 1626, and the Piazza was completed in 1667. Along with St Peter's dome, be sure to visit the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael rooms via the Vatican Museums (Musei del Vaticano). Not only is St Peter's a place for spiritual meditation, but is an art lover's and architectural buff's delight.

The largest draw to Rome, outside of shopping for Italian clothing, would be the exploration of the ruins of Ancient Rome. The remains of temples, arches, and columns, are absolutely exquisite and give you a glimpse of what life was like during the times of Julius Caesar and Augustus. In the picture, you can see the remains of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (left), Arch of Titus (left-center), Temple of Vesta and the House of the Vestal Virgins (center), and remaining columns from the Temple of Castor and Pollux (right-center).

When one thinks of Rome, the first image that comes to most people's mind is the Colosseum (Colosseo). Built between 72 and 96 A.D., the Colosseum has withstood restorations, earthquakes, and World Wars. The Colosseum was built as an ampitheatre but also staged sea battles, whereas the arena was flooded with water, and the noted gladiator games. Although smaller than I expected, it still remains an archectural wonder!

Almost all of the Piazza's within Rome are centered around exquisitely detailed fountains; great places to people-watch and take a break and relax. This Neptune Fountain is located at the north end of Piazza Navona.

For a good look at Gothic and Baroque architecture at its finest, vist many of the churches that are open for viewing during the day. This picture is from Sant 'Ignazio di Loyola, which was built in 1626 and has a beautiful Baroque ceiling painted by Andrea Pozzo.
