During the Sultanate rules in the then Tanah Melayu, pencak silat was performed for the Sultan to showcase the martial art skills of the Panglima or Malay warrior. Silat Pengantin although similar in movements with the combative form of pencak silat is today performed with much grace at Malay weddings, where newlyweds are perceived to be Raja Sehari or the Sultan for the day. Silat pengantin is performed as a welcome gesture for the bridal couple when they arrived at the groom's house for the Bersanding Ceremony.
