Glacier National Park, together with Mount Revelstoke National Park, protects for all time a portion of the Columbia Mountains Natural Region of southeastern British Columbia. Both parks are characterized by steep, angular mountains, deep, narrow valleys, numerous ice-fields and glaciers, waterfalls, countless avalanche paths, and tremendous precipitation. Occupying an area of 1349 square kilometers in the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, Glacier National Park protects critical habitats for threatened and endangered wildlife species such as the grizzly bear and the mountain caribou

Gateway to the Selkirk's
Traveling from Golden, visitors approach Glacier via the Beaver River Valley. In this northward view, showing the eastern edge of the park (at left), the lower (1988) CPR railway grades are clearly visible on the slopes of the Selkirk's, as is the Trans-Canada Highway.
