To get there from the mainland one must take a Ferry boat. Here you see the "ROOSTER TAIL" of it's powerful motor as we fl;y across the bay. In the winter only the permanent residents, the necessary security personnel, army etc. live on the Island. Nearly all the horses are moved to the mainland to winter. The only way to get on the Island in winter is by AIR although in Feb and Mar. if it is cold enough a skidoo trail is opened across the bay ( Dangerous) as the ice does not freeze easily. |
| | The only Transportation on the island Heavy loads of 20 or more people are pulled by 3 horses. less by 2 and taxi 1 horse. The island is all hills so the horses stop often to get their breath. They work only 4 hours per day. The drivers 8 Most of the horses come from CANADA as well as the male or female drivers. At peak season they have as many as 2000 horses. |
Eddy at The Grand Hotel The most outstanding building on the Island is this huge HOTEl. Rooms cost from 1 to 3 thousand USA dollars per night. WE had a buffet lunch here. Cost $50.00 U.S. | | |
