Beautiful Adriatic Coast

Montenegro is located in the southern part of the Balkan peninsula. It is a smaller republic that makes up the union called by the grotesque name of Serbia & Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia). To the west the republic is bordered by Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. To the north it borders its bigger parter Serbia. To the south-east it borders Albania.

Montenegro enjoys the access to 200 km of the Adriatic coastline. The coastline includes some spectacular beaches and the famous Bay of Kotor. The coastline is lined with small islands and pensinsulas that used to be fishing and maritime centers but currenly serve primarily as tourist magnets.

Sacred Monasteries and Churches

No matter where you go in Montenegro, up into the mountains or down to the coastline you are most likely going to come across some beautiful old churches or even monasteries.

Montenegro is the home to several sacred monasteries including the Ostrog Monastery located between Niksic and Podgorica. This monastery is believed to be a special place where the healing powers can aid the sick and the healthy.

Mountains, Lakes and Rivers

Montenegro is rich in natural beauty that extends far beyond its Adriatic coastline. The area is rich is mountains which include the famous Durmitor National Park. If driving through Montenegro from Serbia you will most likely cross the Tara Canyon a breath-taking and steep canyon created by the Tara River. In the region bordering Albania you will find Skadarsko Jezero, a large lake full of neat settlements along its shores.

The two monasteries you mentioned look very beautiful- we did not get to see those in 1986, but will do so in 2004. Great photos of a beautiful country!

Unfortunately, I did not get to see Moraca monastery. Two weeks was not enough for everything...
