La Mecilla is about 40 minutes west of El Paso, Texas. it's a very small town that dates wayyyyyyyyy back to the 1600's with the Spanish immigrants.
It's now a very pretty little artists colony with a lot of really nice shops and restaurants.
I used to come here about once a month when I lived in El Paso for the chili peppers and nuts. There are tons of pecan trees growing all over the place, and the nuts are huge! |
| | shops The shop in the picture used to be the La Mexia jail. It supposedly held Billy the Kid at one point. Now it's a little shop and restaurant. Fairly good Tex-Mex food if a bit pricy. |
The scenery is incredible! I fell in love with the scenery of new Mexico. At times the mountains seem to just appear from nowhere and take over the view. These are the hills between El Paso and La Mecilla. The land is basically a desert, but there is a small river running through La Mecilla that makes the land extremely fertile, and cotton, pecans and chilis are the main produce. | | |

TheWanderingCamel Wed Jun 3, 2009 14:31 UTC Love New Mexico - must get back there one day. El Paso's a name to conjure up shades of the west too. | richiecdisc Thu May 21, 2009 19:06 UTC Good to see your take on your old stomping grounds, Susan. As always we missed something only a local would know. Hope there's a next time soon! | jumpingnorman Sun Apr 26, 2009 22:40 UTC Did you know this Church in Mesilla just became a Basilica last Nov 2008 -- so they had that red/orange umbrella from Vatican to indicate their new status --- nice to see we saw the same places! Norman :) | hindu1936 Sun Apr 19, 2009 17:03 UTC Did you know that Billy actually wasn't killed by the law, but lived to die of very old age? True, I saw the movie.
