African house at Melrose Plantation

African house
Angie and I went through Lousiana on our way back from Virginia after daddy passed away. We went south for some reason, I think it was a spur of the moment sort of thing when we hit the state line. We ended up at Melrose Plantation right after it opened for the day. it was hot and muggy outside, but we wandered all over the place anyway. This was a "schoolhouse' that a former slave used to teach the kids how to read and write. it's decorated by her (I wish I could remember her name) inside and out with American Primitive Artwork (as it's called). lots of pictures on the walls of slave activities. she didn't much like her "master" as all the pictures of him have him with a really SMALL head.
Melrose Plantation

Melrose Plantaion house

This is a picture of the plantation house itself. Didn't look a thing like I expected. I watch too many old movies; it's obvious.
Oakland plantation

Oakland Plantation

This is Oakland Plantation. It's up the road from Melrose and has a really good display of old farm implements. Also shows how cotton was grown during the anti-bellum days. It's part of a state park now and their are "rangers" all over the place. It still didn't look like a plantation to me. We walked around back of this house and there's a river that runs behind. The river was full of alligators, and we were warned to keep our distance. It seems they can move quite quickly on land. Since I didn't want to become breakfast for the scaly things, and I actually LIKED Angie that day, we moved away from the river.

Pros:"lots of historical sites to visit, people are FRIENDLY"
Cons:"way too muggy in the spring and summer months."

Excellent tips on Southern Louisiana. BTW, I felt the same way about some of the plantation homes - what? They don't ALL look like Tara? lol
