First "Virtual fight" | Airlie meet VA getting drunk! |
I found VT after I'd been to Israel once and was looking for information on a hotel across the street from where I had stayed in Jerusalem. I came across this really weird website called "Virtual Tourist" and at first thought that it was a website for wanna-be travelers. Found out quickly that it was a great place to share experiences, memories, complaints and praises for all the places I could ever wish to go. please check out my guest mapI started to post in the misc. forum after about a week of trolling through it. I didn't know what trolling even WAS until Pam (KIWI) explained it to me. then I stopped it and started to really post. I got in my first virtual fight on VT. ...said something that made an Irishman get his dander up, many angry posts back and forth until it became totally ridiculous, we both apologized and we've become good friends since then. He can't remember what it was all about, and I'm not about to remind him! |
| VT members painting the library |
| | First VT mini-meet I started a library in my town and was busily posting all the updates as to how many shelves we had built, that we were going to have a workday and lo and behold two VT members showed up on the appointed day to help out! I was flabbergasted by it! Roz Wayson and Georg Hardin showed up with their wives to help paint, putty and generally create havoc amongst us all! It was wonderful! |
Library crafts with VT help One of my most memorable VT moments took weeks to end! I have a group of Kids that come to the library for arts and crafts every week. During the early spring, I asked VT members to send postcards from their homes to the kids. The response was overwhelming. We received 172 post cards from all over the world. The kids learned about the countries on the postcards: the culture, climates, geography and geology of each country represented, and then made posters with the cards attached to show some of what they learned. The kids thought that finland was named because it "looks like a shark's fin!" I made a travelogue of the posters the children made, and you can go see it on my Cottonwood Shores page.%c
| | VT meet at the Library opening
It opened April 18, 2009 and it was a smashing success! Three VT members were there for the opening (one dressed up as a dog for hours!), we had food, face painting, a chess tournement, games, door prizes, other giveaways from the electric co-op, the LCRA (water people) and the Parks and Wildlife department. Had well over 100 people show up, had a bunch of books and videos checked out, and several people signed up to volunteer their time. We made over $300.00 and were given a slew of shelving units for our expansion plans (we're already in need of more space). It was marvelous. Go see my new travelogue about the library open house for more pictures.

I learned what a "good" tip is....and isn't! When I first started to add tips, I thought "this isn't so hard"....then I asked for Lynn Hammon's help cause I realized just how bad they were after reading hers! When writing a tip, try to spell correctly, try to keep your own personal feelings out of it unless you're gushing about how wonderful something is. stick to the facts as much as possible. Don't ever copy anything from the WEB!!! big no-no there! I personally haven't done it, but judging the misc comments on others who do?? Well, suffice it to say I don't want to be associated with the names I've seen them called! Try to keep cats off the computer while you're writing. It makes for strange misspellings. Just try and write something that a reasonable person would want to read and you'll do fine. | | | cat helping to write tips! |

| | Finding new and old friends online There are about 3 dozen people that I now think of as good friends, even though I've never met them. Zanzooni, slapshot, VZ Pam, JumpingNorman, McAlpin, Hansi and LoriPori, Lynn Hammon, Kiwi, Buffybird, Song, Tropicord, UnaS, TinaPerth, the WanderingCamel, risse 73, Dester, Stephanie, Giampero; good grief, the list can go on for days and I wouldn't be able to list the people that have come to mean the world to me..literally! I think the greatest thing that VT has done for me is to open up my very small world with these wonderful people that I have met. Not to mention that VT may have helped me find my 8th grade boyfriend!

Sorry, just can't get Domino off my homepage Domino is my favorite traveling companion. She goes where I go whenever possible and has been the reason for about 2 dozen tips on my pages through texas. I have been writing about dog friendly places for all the members that have fuzzy companions (not you LoriPori, Hansi is NOT the fuzzy type I'm speaking of here!).
I'm trying to go through each Texas town and add pet specific tips for those that want to travel the state with their babies in tow. There are so places that actually encourage pet owners to visit and I'll try to update my pages as quickly as I can for those that just can't leave home without 'em,..........their pets that is!
| the things I photograph now! |
| | And so she leaves............... November 2009 As my time as a Rookie is drawing to an end, I have been thinking back on all the places i've seen thanks to the member's pages, and all the things I've learned about the world (again, thanks to the member's pages), and I am grateful. I'm grateful that you all laughed with me (and at me, I know) that some cried with me during times of pain, that some prayed with and for me when my son went back to war and when I had my heart attacks. That you all cheered me on when I was feeling low, that you sent emails and jokes to me when I needed some extra support, and that you're all ready willing and able to meet anytime, anywhere that other travelers are willing to meet. You have all made my life so much better for knowing each and everyone of you. |
