The town

Zell am See is a very lovely town in Salzburgerland.
Surrounded by beautiful mountains and home of a scenic lake, it has everything one could wish for ! In summer as in winter, thousands of tourists visit here and fall in love with it.
Together with Kaprun it forms the skiregion "Europa Sportregion".
Zell am See is located in the valley between the Saalach and the Salzach rivers.
It's at an altitude of 758 metres above sea level.

It's the capital of the district with the same name and consists of 5 parts : Bruckberg (residential area), Erlberg (includes a nature reserve), Schmitten (location of many cableways), Thumersbach (noble district, seaside resort and beautiful landscape) and Zell am See (with the old town and Schuttdorf).

The town was already inhabited during the times of the Roman empire and received it's 'city rights' in 1928.
Nowadays it has about 10.000 inhabitants.

The lake

The lake Zeller See is known for it's very clean water. It's said to have drinking-water quality.
At the deepest point, the lake is about 68 metres deep.

You can rent a boat, take a swim, take a ride on a pedalo, go surfing or sailing, go waterskiing or fishing ... or just sit back, relax and enjoy the splendid view.

There is a gorgeous promenade aside the lake.

The town and it's lake were featured as a location for the series "Band of Brothers" by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Have a look at episode 10 ...

The "house-mountains"

Zell am See is - of course - not only famous for it's lake, but also for the fabulous mountains surrounding it.

The Schmittenhöhe is the best known one.
This mountain on the eastern edge of the Kitzbühler Alps is 1.956 metres high and can easily be reached by cable car from Zell am See.
When you're on top of the Schmittenhöhe, you have a stunning view of over 30 peaks that are over 3.000 metres high ! The Grossglockner is one of them. The Zeller See and the Saalach valley are of course viewable way down below.
It's quite busy in winter, because it has about 77 kilometres of trails available for all kinds of wintersports.
In summer you can go for a hike or Nordic walk, afterwards enjoying refreshments in the panorama restaurant.
If you're more advanturous, you can take off for a paragliding of hanggliding tour. For the ones without any experience in this sport, you can book a tandem flight accompanied by an experienced pilot.

The second well-known mountain is the Hundstein. It's Austria's highest grass-mountain.
You can hike up there leaving from Thümersbach. Up there you can re-strenghten your inner-self at the Statzerhaus. And of course you get a fantastic panoramic view again, which makes the long hike soooo worthwhile !

Fine summer photos of Zell am See. My one visit there was years ago, during a grey and slushy winter. From your photos I have a much better impression of the place.

      Thanks!
We've been there in the pouring rain too though .. but "sunny-pictures" do it much more justice of course ...
