Torshavn | View of Torshavn as we hiked south to Kirkjubour |
We were based in Torshavn for our entire stay. This is a convenient central location - you can pretty much get anywhere within an hour. It probably has more bars, restaurants and hotels than the rest of the country put together.
We stayed in Hotel Streym. This suited us very well. The owner, Aage, was tremendous fun and very helpful. As was Sunuwar (we think it was spelt like that).
The rooms were a little on the small side and we felt a bit cramped. However, hotel had everything we needed and we were allowed to drink our own beer here (which certainly saved us a few quid).
You can hire cars from the hotel. Would definitely recommend doing this for a couple of days as not only are some places tricky to get to, but the public transport is not always convenient (albeit very reliable). The buses are also quite expensive (£10 single to Klakvik). Therefore, a car can work out pretty cheap (about £50 a day). Petrol is slightly cheaper than in the UK.
You can either eat quite cheaply or very expensively:
1. Fast food places - there's a Burger King, fish and chip shop, pasta and pizza places etc. Therse were all relativley cheap but not particularly tasty (deep fried to death). 2. Several of the main hotels (Torshavn, Faroyar, Hafnia) have restaurants. These are all quite pricey and you'll probably feel a little bit ripped off. Merlot had some excellent food but not even their lamb was local. Maybe best to eat out at lunchtime and go cheap in the evening. Could always try self catering...
At lunchtime, a couple of the hotels do a eat as much as you want buffett. Hotel Hafnia seemed to be the best. For around £10 we had some excellent food. |
