The church is a landmark over a wide area. The white, twin-spired building was completed in 1910, while the ruins of the previous place of worship, dating from the fifteenth or sixteenth century, are, appropriately enough, in the cemetery. Like the church, the adjacent Cistercian monastery, which produces its own liquor, was built during the first decade of the twentieth century, and was the first really large reinforced concrete structure in Spain. The cheese factory on the main road was opened in 1907 under Swiss management and produced the local equivalent of a Gruyère. It was later taken over by SAM. The large mansion set back off the lane to the small, sandy beach is the eighteenth century Casal de Cóbreces.
