Egypt - Like Coming Home

by NilePrincess - last update: Jul 25, 2009

My Credentials :-)

Let me just state off the bat that I'm not an Egyptologist or a licensed guide. I'm just someone who stepped off the plane, had that 100 degree weather hit me in the face and felt like I'd finally come home. The charm and warmth of the people, the immensity of the monuments and the depth of the history have all spoken to my heart and soul.

I have now visited five times in three years and been to the following places - Alexandria twice, Cairo three times, Luxor five times, Aswan four times, Abu Simbel twice, Edfu Kom Ombo, Dendera twice, Dahab, Sharm El Sheikh, The Siwa Oasis and other remote villages whose names I don't know.

I feel very strongly about supporting the local businesses, especially the women's projects in some of the more remote villages. I tend to travel independently but feel that employing a local guide enriches your experience in ways you may miss on your own.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. I love to talk about Egypt.

Living among the locals

While in Luxor, I usually rent an apartment (flat) on the West Bank as I love the feeling of community that it gives me. People are often under the misconception that the West Bank is still 'the place of the dead' as it was in Ancient times; but they couldn't be more misinformed. The West Bank has seen much development in recent years and there are now some beautiful homes available for rent and sale there.

While, hopefully, it will never be as 'city-like' as the East Bank, you can find very modern amenities and beautiful accommodations. See pic. It was heaven!

Very thorough review of safety in Egypt and nice tips! Great work, Nile Princess...who is your favorite pharaoh? Mine is Rameses...but Hatshepsut intrigues me...Norman :)

Thankyou for your helpful itinerary. I will be doing a tour, don't want to visit the Red Sea, but I want to go to Siwa. Haven't found the tour yet, plenty of time for research.
