| View of Tombs of the Nobles from the Nile |
| | I say Aswan. You say Assuan. No matter how its spelt, Aswan spells one thing - relaxation. Located in Upper Egypt, it usually serves merely as a stopover for those wishing to visit Abu Simbel, but people are missing out. While Aswan is not as busy as Luxor, it has so much to offer. It's a perfect respite after the hectic bustle of Cairo and the hassles of Luxor. Don't simply spend the night and abandon it at the crack of down to see Abu Simbel. While on sightseeing holidays, we're so busy 'doing' that sometimes we don't stop to 'experience'. Aswan is less of a 'doing' place and more of a 'feeling one'. In Aswan, it's all about the vibe and that's why I love it.
If you just cannot sit still, Aswan has no shortage of activities to fill your day. It is the most picturesque city on the Nile; enjoy a felucca ride. You can go for 'quiet and romantic' or join other tourists by tying boats together and singing, clapping and dancing along with your Nubian captains.
Get up close and personal by visiting a real nubian village and playing with the children.
Have lunch at Chef Khalil's and go shopping in the local markets.
The Nubian Museum is a true treat as are the tombs of the Nobles.
And if you still haven't gotten your fill of temples, visit Philae and Kalabsha.
Lastly, as a geographic reference, don't forget that even though Aswan is in the South, it is called Upper Egypt because the Nile flows south to North and the Nile is the life blood of Egypt. |
