Travel Back in Time

by NilePrincess - last update: Oct 19, 2008

Siwa is often heralded as the most authentic oases in the Western desert, and from the moment the bus rolled into town and I saw the donkey carts go past, I understood the draw of the place. Quite simply, you feel like you're in another world or at least another century. Things are changing....there are 4x4 jeeps, complete with GPS parked alongside the bicycles and donkeys and more and more buses are pulling up loaded with tourists. This both excites and worries the Siwan people...and those of us who would like Siwa to stay the gem that it is.

Keeping It Real

Even with these developments, Siwa is still pretty much a laid back town. Hassle is non existent and 10 mins from the center exist sand dunes and solitude, and more stars at night than you've ever seen in your life. My advice is to go now before, heaven forbid, a McDonald's pops up.

Desert Safari

The highlight of any trip to Siwa is going out to see the sand dunes. There are many shops in Siwa Town so check around for the companies with the best prices and reputation. Up the ante and spend the night in the desert. It stands out as my fondest memory of Siwa.

Wonderful intro photo here, it is like the clash of the past meets the future. Lovely accomodations and I agree, the pancakes sound wonderful. Nice page!
