"A life of travel" RogerLB's Profile

Potted history

My travelling days started in my early teens and I have been fortunate enough to visit many parts of the world since then. There are still places I wish to go so I will keep on trucking so to speak.
Early days were mainly local as air travel was cost prohibitive but during the period between the ages of 15 & 40 I served in the British armed forces and travelled to places I could only have dreamt about.
From age 40 to 53 I worked for an international company and this led to periods of significant travel in many European countries and the USA. So from a travelling point of view I have been so very fortunate.
From age 53 I have had to fund my own trips and I don't begrudge spending a penny of it as I managed to work around the continents with South America still to go.
Hobies have come and gone over the years, parachuting, sub aqua and climbing have been replaced by by less strenuous pursuits and sleeping rough has given way to more comfortable accomodation !
My shortest flight was from London to Plymouth, taking an hour and my longest was over 20 hours from Australia to London, but I did take a 3 day break in Singapore on the way. I still hate flying !
I have taken a train trip coast to coast across canada which was great, I have driven from San Fransico to LA anlong the Pacific Coastal route and I have sailed around the UK, Europe and the Med. My preferred option I think has to be the train. More time consuming, but less stressful.

Favourites

In alphabetical order these have to be:
Australia which I have visited twice. Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef are among many places which should not be missed.
Canada which I have visited twice. Cosmopolitan Vancouver, The Rockies and Niagra Falls are terrific
Cyprus where I hace been many times and enjoyed the frendliness of the local population. A trip to the top of the Trodos Mountains on a clear day gives spectacular views.
Portugal I have visited 6 times and found the locals a cheerful and friendly people and in the south of the country the climate and beaches are a real bonus.
Scotland. I lived there for many years in the 1970's and since then I have visited more times than I can remember. The scenery in the Highlands around Glecoe and the Nevis Range is breathtaking and many of the Glens around the Inverness area are rugged and peaceful.

Number One

This has to be Scotland. I have lost count of the times I have visited and each time opens something new for me.
I think the scenery and the wildlife are continual draws for me and I never tire of it.
My most recent stay was for 15 days and I am looking forward for another visit as soon as I can.

Roger, so you were involved in the long-ago Malaysia 'affair' where firm action really did have an effect! I bet you would have some interesting pages to post from those days. A bit like you, I too 'worked' my way around the world.

Welcome to VT, Roger and belated Happy Birthday. Some of my wife's ancestors came from St. Agnes and we visited there last fall. A lovely part of the world you have in Cornwall.
