We are on the island of Santorini ....officially Thira.
No...those are white houses perched high on the cliffs...587 steps...a donkey ride...or a cablecar to the top. The little town that you see as your ship anchors is the capital Skala. (This photo of Oia gives you a better idea of the "snow" than the one I have of Skala)
And on a busy day it might take forever for your turn on the cable car....so plan wisely. Choose the ship that anchors early or make sure you are on an official tour for early embarkation.
Now Santorini is officially named Thira and that is the name on the map we had in our cabin...so there must be a little story here...but I do not know it.
We came to Santorini on our cruise ship "Seabourn Odyssey".
Now it was a bit scary to be told of all the volcanic activity that brought this beautiful place into existence...and not so long ago ! We were not the only ones that prayed there would be no eruptions on the day of our visit.
Our tender took us around to another small port and we first visited the little town of Oia...and then it was the delights of Greek Cooking where we got to don on the chef's cap and striped apron.

In Oia there is the marble street...we walked along this lovely street...And in Skala there is a "gold" street. In contrast we were told the beaches were black...caused by volcanic ash...and there is also one red beach(iron).
Very little rain falls here so water is a problem. But the soil is rich. Plants are mostly watered by condensation...quite an ingenious system with grapes as the vines are curled into a basket to enclose the growing grapes...a method which not only which not only traps moisture but protects the grapes from the sun.
The shape of some local fruit is caused by this method of growing...zucchini are round and there are the small tomatoes. The flavour is great.
