A Land of Forests

Slovenia is a land of forest ...62%. The people love the outdoors in the fresh air and with the beautifully clear waters of their river systems.

And in the background are the three peaks of the mountain that must be climbed for you to be a true Slovenian.

Why they even have "climbing kindergarten" to prepare the young for the outdoors.
Brown bears live here. Many came to escape the horror of the sounds of war in neighbouring countries in the not too distant past.

Lake Bohini

Golden Horn

Many stories are told and one such myth about love and greed and immortality surrounds the statue of the Golden Horn Goat found on the edge of Lake Bohini.

Now the Golden Horn gives its name to a beer made in Slovenia...not bad to drink either.

The countryside and small towns

The Linden Tree

Every town has its Linden tree where the town folk meet and sit on the bench around the tree.

The people also enjoy a special brandy' Jamnica' which we all tasted out in the country near unique hay stacks racks(Kozolec), and the beehives with the special paintings. (We later bought replicas of the paintings and have them home now in Australia).

Most preferred the sweeter Blueberry brandy but I quite liked the one not so sweet but a little stronger.

An aside...the currency in 2011 was euro as Slovenia is in the EU.

thank you wisegirl, for writing the way you did about Slovenia. It really is quite special, and the woods are forever in my mind.
