We came on tour from Queen Mary2.....a couple hours by bus from the port. Nothing prepared me for my first glimpse of unfinished buildings....washing hanging from every balcony... people living in hovels..animals and their droppings in the street ...piles of rubbish...polluted water...beggars...no road rules.
Yet my niece who lived there for a while told me she loved it and would go back anyday. Maybe I need another go.
Do you like the dancer? "He is a dervish. The word "dervish" comes from the Persian "darvish". It meaning a poor man.
The whirling dervishes are one of various brotherhoods of Sufis.
This is in fact mystical dance which takes you closer to ‘God’."

But there they were in all their ancient splendor the breath taking pyramids and the Sphinx. Surrounded by people, camels, dust, tourist buses and just across the road the shops..was it a Pizza hut I saw or Macdonalds?
I had imagined the pyramids to be miles out of town in the middle of nowhere.
Our tour guide had warned us to stay way from the "hawkers". She would take us to a good shop. Do not let them take your camera or you will pay to get it back.
Well our camera fell into the hands of "one of them" and "yes" we had to pay 5 euro to get it back! But what good pictures. Worth every penny.
Well our guide had an ulterior motive. Glad we bought a few things before her shop where she was seen sipping whatever and no doubt getting a hand out. She did arrange for my name to be in hieroglyphics though and mine is nicer than a lot of others.
What was for sale in "her shop" was OK but there were some really interesting and different things out there. Prices varied a lot and I paid a bit much for papyrus but I have 2 that I love.
Wait for it. Wisedancer was offered quite a few chickens for me! He says 6 but it was lots more than that. I asked if the guy had wives already and he said "Two. But I want a little one"
- Pros:Takes your breath away
- Cons:So much pollution
- In a nutshell:Unimaginable

well, good thing you got a glimpse when you did!! --and I'm sure the view has NOT improved! I doubt now that I ever will, with all that's been going on last couple yrs. hopefully the pyramids will not be lost......
Hi Marg, you are welcome to use any text you like :-). Thank you. I like your advices and this here I can confirm from my experience.
Good tip Marg and a great pic.
Thanks for the kind words....Cairo is one of my favorite places. I'm so broke at the moment, can't imagine when I'll next be able to visit. Sigh. Sounds like you enjoyd yourself despite touts.... you gotta go with the flow. Nice photo of twirling fartknockers, as Beavis and Butthead call them...or as we used to call ballerinas when I worked for the Royal Opera House.
I visited Cairo several years ago. Look at my page. L.
My son was in Cairo a few weeks ago, so I know what you are talking about LOL
Love that opening photo. Yes, some countries are a real culture shock. My friend lived in one those countries, and they wanted to buy her for 12 camels! This was years ago, sounds like they still do it.
I have been offered carved elephants for trainers and a camel (1) for a woman. I asked what I would do with 1 camel. At least with 6 chcikens you can makes eggs, more chickens and dinner! Well your husband can anyway. ;-)
What a HOOT of a page, Marg!! HA! sounds like a really special memory that day!!! thank goodness David didn't need any chickens just then!
