SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Well Adelaide is a city surrounded by beautiful parkland with the hills in the background. Being August at the time of our very first visit it was a little drizzly when we arrived but it soon became fine yet clear and crisp. Having AussieBarney (The VT Sheep Mascot) in tow besides some VAs(Virtual Attendees) heading for the Alice Springs Big Aussie Meet has kept us very busy finding things to do to make it exciting for them.
Adelaide, still being of moderate size, was not difficult to explore.
We wish we were here a big longer as there are many attractions. We visited the Rundle Mall which,we were told,is one of the first malls ever built in Australia and we found most of the shops open even on Sunday. Many are owned by families so a day off is needed. They seem to like chocolate as there are two shops facing each other on the corner of the Mall.
We had a ride in a motorized buggy, then were surprised to find the 4 bronze pigs...Truffles, Oliver, Horatio ,and Augusta which make a very striking display.
A friendly Adelaidean pointed us to the O-Bahn...the only other being in Germany. This is a transport system where the buses have a guiding wheel which follows tracks without direction by the driver. This brilliant system is very popular as it avoids the roads and is fast. We went for a short journey.
So off to the surrounding Adelaide Hills, Mt Lofty and the German Town of Hahndorf which is loved by all the visitors and locals who travel there...not far from the city on the new highway.
On our day trip to the Barossa Valley we visited wineries, The Whispering Wall and the Big Rocking Horse.
Met two girls from Hong Kong who took to AussieBarney(V T Mascot) and our VA(Virtual Attendee) chocolatecake as well as her nephew Kuang Kuang..
- Pros:Still has the charm of bygone days
- Cons:Can be a little cool and windy
- In a nutshell:Wish we could stay longer

A lovely page, I enjoyed reading the tips, hehe, "there is nothing sweet about me" ;) I like the little pigs. Too bad about the room with no view though.
Thank you for this nice page Marg.
Hans would have loved it here - Casino aaaand sweet shops.
Excellent page Marg! I am enjoying your adventures!
Funny that there is a German town in Australia called Hahndorf. (That means “Rooster Village” in German.)
Brings back fond memories when I lived in Adelaide. Great tips.
well, after 10 days I finally hv computer connxn back; so here I am! interesting read about the Stamford and the food! seems strange.....but a nice reminiscence of Adelaide for me--again, wish I could have been there with you!
Nice tips. One of my sons played baseball against Australian teams when he was 19 in Adelaide. He loved it. I would love the casino. lol ;-)
And I have a sweet tooth!
