How many Wintons?

With a name such as Winton I thought there would only be one...but 'no', there are more, not only in Australia but also in other parts of the world.
This Winton is the outback Winton...not too far from the border of Queensland and Northern Territory...just 'down the road' from Boulia and I really love this place...heaps nicer that Longreach with all its museums and fan fare...IMO.

Winton is located in Central Western Queensland on the Landsborough Highway, 178 kilometres north-west of Longreach and 470 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. Winton is approximately 1,500 kilometres from Brisbane.

The main industries of the area are sheep and cattle raising. The area surrounding the town has yielded a number of dinosaur fossils, including 'Elliot', a sauropod...but we did not do the trip.

Special things

David's mentor was associated with Winton and we even found that his grandaughter and her husband own one of the pubs.....There were 4 pubs as I remember.

We also found Tranby's sheep brand still on the wall of the museum.

And the true birthplace of Qantas.
"Qantas' first, and granted only, board meeting was held in Winton on 10 Feb 1921".

Our Mystery Tour of small towns and pubs.

So we now head for Springsure and the Virgin Rock

Its also the birthplace of Qantas and was (and perhaps still is) the home of a not so good Chinese restaurant (in the RSL club) which was the only place open one holiday when i was passing through. Some years ago now.

That's the general thinking - fostered by the museum there and also the Longreach name on Qantas 747's. Qantas' first, and granted only, board meeting was held in Winton on 10 Feb 1921. Have a look here - qantas.com.au/travel/airline...

So this is where Waltzing Matilda originated! We learned to sing it in school in the US when we were learning about Australia. Good that you didn’t have a power failure like Mirjam did.
