AGRA-

by lynnehamman - last update: Jul 15, 2009

Agra, although it has a fascinating history, is today a shadow of what it once must have been. It is in northern India in the state of Uttar Pradesh, about 200 south of Delhi. Only its very famous and UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE listed monuments keep Agra from falling off the map.(my personal opinion)
The city has little else other than the Taj Mahal & Red Fort.
Pollution is unbearable, and travellers are pestered by persistant touts and hawkers at every monument, mosque, temple or palace. This was the most annoying thing about the city. Touts I can usually handle- but these were very hardcore- they would NOT leave us alone. It spoiled what could have bearable in usual circumstance.
However, the monuments, especially the Taj Mahal, are so unique, so perfect, that no trip to India is complete without at least one visit here, if only just to see the perfect monument to love.
YAMUNA RIVER

BRIEF HISTORY OF AGRA

Founded in 1475, Agra was chosen by the Lodhi Kings as their capital.. It sits on th banks of the Yamuna River.
Sikander Lodhi made Agra his capital but Babar defeated the Lodhis to capture not only Agra but also laid the foundation of the Mughal empire.

The Mughal Empire, during the reign of Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan brought Agra fame and prosperity. It became the center of art, culture and commerce and learning during Akbars reign. New heights were reached when Shah Jahan became ruler.

In the 16th and 17th century Agra underwent rapid growth, and it was during this time Taj Mahal was built. The buildings made during this era were of very high quality, which is still reflected in whatever monuments remain in Agra. The streets and lanes of Agra are still filled with the aroma of Mughlai spices, and the craftsmen still work. Sadly, progress had to take its course, and today other smells pervade- smog, pollution and bad drainage systems in the streets.
There are too many cars and motor cycles everywhere in India. In Agra there seemed to be more than average. And the roads are not good.

Interesting updates to this page, Lynne. Touts, pollution and all, the Taj is one place I'd really love to visit. As your photos have confirmed for me.
