When our group stayed at the hotel, I was first taken back by the beautiful location of the hotel right in the centre of benghazi town close to the port area and city shopping centre. However the beauty of the hotel was only evident in its marble covered exterior and interior floors, but the furnishings, lifts and general service was terible. Talking to one waiter about the state of the hotel, he whispered that some 30 years ago the hotel which had been built in the 1960's by private entepreneurs, was taken over by a worker's committee following gadafi's socialization program. Well this committee ended up taking a five star hotel and sending it back to the stone age in looks and service. The hotel is now going through some maintenance work, however previous owners still have not been compensated, so do not expect the new renovators to be any different from the worker's committees.
