Please don't forget to sign in my GUESTBOOK AND MAP so I know where you ARE! (Escriba/Firma en mi mapa por farvor!)VIEW MY GUESTBOOK AND MAPOne Billion Chinese - some of my ancestors (I am probably 25% Chinese) did come from mainland southern China. Maybe I am related to some of those who helped or were forced to build the Great Wall - or maybe my ancestors were just lazy like me? Hehehehe...but if I were alive during that time, I probably would have practiced acupuncture or some traditional medicine. Or maybe I would have just planted rice...oh well, I am so un-Chinese now but I can still imagine myself living in this great land. |
| | I hired a driver and l also found a private guide (a young girl named Yangze and you can See Yangze's Video Showing me Around Tiannamen) who was eager to practice her English. If you can afford it, I advise you to just get your own car/driver/guide because it is better than being in a bus full of tourists. Their service was excellent, beginning early in the morning and I had to kindly ask them to send me back to my hotel at 9PM in the middle of a major acrobatic show because I was already too tired (and the next day was another full day of touring!). These guides are so hardworking! But no matter how you see China (luxury or backpacking), I am sure you'll still enjoy it because there's so much to do! A lot of people were trying to speak English in preparaton for the Olympics, and they practice with every opportunity. I must say I was impressed wih the Opening Ceremonies which I just watched on TV later on back in the USA. |
| | Stairs to Heaven Few cities in the world besides Beijing have served as the political and cultural centre of an area as immense as China for so long. The Encyclopædia Britannica describes it as, "One of the world's great cities," and declares, "The city has been an integral part of China’s history over the past eight centuries, and nearly every major building of any age in Beijing has at least some national historical significance." |

Nemorino Wed Oct 28, 2009 22:49 UTC Good that you had such a nice private guide who insisted that you see the Summer Palace. Even if she wasn't too amused about the emperor's costume. | lindyz Mon Oct 5, 2009 09:06 UTC Norman, I just read you bit about the meaning of the words above the Emperors Chair (same one we did). I always thought it meant something like "Ha ha I just ripped you off!" | Yaqui Fri Aug 21, 2009 21:25 UTC Ok, you didn't jump around Beijing? We need to remedy that! Lovely page Norman:) | hopang Wed Aug 19, 2009 14:43 UTC Lovely Beijing page. The Summer Palace and The Great Wall of China were two of our favourite tourist attractions in Beijing. Certainly bring back fond memories of our trip to that city last year. ~ho & pang |
