Aswan is located about 81 miles south of Luxor and has a distinctively African atmosphere with the Nubian influence. Its ancient Egyptian name was Syene.

To reach the Philae temple, you have to ride a boat - it is an island that was completely submerged with the construction of the High Dam. Before this, visitors could view the partially submerged ruins of the temple of Philae on rowboats. Because of the construction of the High Dam, the Philae Temple was dismantled and reassembled (on Agilika Island about 550 meters from its original home on Philae Island).

Artifacts on the island date between the 26th Dynasty and the Roman Period, but most of the work is from that of the Roman. The Goddess Isis was very popular at the time and so the temple was dedicated her, and pilgrims travelled to this temple from all over the Mediterranean.
Construction took place over an 800 year span, and it was one of the last strongholds of Ancient Egyptian Religion which continued until the 6th Century. When the Temples where finally closed by Justinian in A.D 550, it ended 4,000 years of worship of the pagan gods.
