"Jumping in Santiago" Santiago by jumpingnorman

FINALLY, I was able to visit Santiago, Chile which I have read so much about when I was still a teenager. I was only 17 years old when I won an award at the Embassy of Chile in the Philippines for writing an essay about "Chile and the Pacific Rim" (while studying at the University of the Philippines, Diliman)....and years later, I ventured into this beautiful South American country during its bicentennial Independence celebrations :)

Here I am jumping with Amazonian-Brazilian Karina, girlfriend of my good friend from Caxias, Brazil - Joao, who showed me around Santiago where he has decided to live in :)

You will be amazed by how progressive and modern Santiago is among the Latin Amercian countries, and the people themselves are very well-disciplined, with the streets clean and well-maintained. Viva Chilenos!

I will be writing slowly about what I did around the area of Santiago, but this is a list of what I thought were highlights of my trip:

1. Cerro Santa Lucia - a hill with an amazing view of the city! You can just walk up to the top
2. Cerro San Cristobal - an even higher hill (much muich higher- we used a car or you can use the funicular), with a statue of the Virgin Mary at the top
3. Plaza de Armas - watching the Chilean people
Walking around very modern Las Condes and its parks
4. Los Dominicos - see the church and buy some handicrafts
5. Walking around Bella Vista and eating at its good restaurants
6. Walking around Av Paris and Londres

Farther from Santiago:
1. Vina del Mar and Valparaiso
2. Casablanca Valley and its wineries
3. Cajon del Maipo - hike to wonderful waterfalls and great views
4. The amazing ski resorts - especially Valle Nevado
5. Isla Negra and the house of Pablo Neruda
6. Pomaire - great bargains for clay works of art
