Valkenburg, the Xmas city of the Netherlands Valkenburg, a small city in the south of the Netherlands, has found a new source of tourism. In the old days Valkenburg was only a hotspot in summer. Its convienient location near the German and Belgium border as well as the beautifull Limburgs landscape makes it the place to be. Valkenburg itself has lots to offer: caves, dug out by miners. A coalmine, now only operated as a museum. A castle ru?n, on top of the hill. An amusentpark for the kids, a cable car and lots more. In the centre of town are many nice places to have a drink or eat something.
But the last years Valkenburg discovered an other form of tourism: Xmas shopping. Two caves, the Fluweelengrot and the Gemeentegrot are turned into Xmas markets. Not only the caves makes it an unique experience but also the entourage. The Fluweelengrot had a story with gnomes and the Gemeentegrot had the story of a knight who once lived in the castle. And every year there is a new theme. In 2005 the theme is Xmas around the world.
In 2005 the events are from november 18th untill december 20th. The christmas markets in the caves are open: mon to fr 12.00-21.00, weekend: 11.00-21.00.

| Walking around Valkenburg | During the rest of the year Valkenburg is a great place to have basecamp while hiking or biking in the dutch mountains. We have regular weekend breaks here.
Some walking routes are described in our off the beaten path tips.
And if you are a fanatic cyclist do think of riding the Amstel Gold Race. It is the only cycling classic our country knows. There is a tourversion the day before the race. In april 2004 Tom managed to finish the 150 km at the top of the Cauberg in just under 6 hours. In april 2005 the weather was bad and it took him 30 minutes longer. |
| parade during the Schuttersfeest, Valkenburg |
Soak in a little of the Limburg culture too. If possible visit a Schuttersfeest , where local associations of marksmen battle for the honor. First there is a parade around town and then the shooting starts.
See the travelogue for more pics and explanations.
Next trip: soon... |
